Awards shows always have big moments that have audiences talking, and the Emmys 2024 has people buzzing about Pedro Pascal’s joke aimed at Kieran Culkin. Pedro Pascal has had an amazing 2023, having roles in major projects such as HBO’s Last of Us and Disney+’s The Mandalorian. Given his excellent performances in these shows, it is no surprise that he has been up for a number of big awards. For example, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama and an Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

While there was much anticipation to see if Pascal’s lack of award-show success would finally change, the actor ended up making news in another way. He decided to take the opportunity to throw a little bit of shade at Kieran Culkin while presenting an award to Matthew Macfadyen for his role as Tom Wambsgans on Succession. The joke was all in good fun, but without proper context, it can seem odd or out of place.

Why Pedro Pascal Said Kieran Culkin Beat Him Up

The sling has seemingly become a part of Pascal’s awards show attire, as he showed up to the 2024 Emmys with it on his arm as well. During the show, Pascal made a joke that Succession‘s Kieran Culkin beat him up, and that is why he was in the sling. His exact words were “Kieran Culkin beat the shit out of me“. For those unfamiliar with the two actor’s silly “feud”, this joke may have seemed mean-spirited or been confusing.

The fake feud began at the Golden Globes when Culkin was accepting his prize for best actor in a TV drama thanks to his fantastic part in Succession. During his acceptance speech, Culkin took the opportunity to tell the audience that he had been nominated for a Golden Globe around 20 years ago and when he did not win, he thought to himself he would never come back. He then went on to say that Succession allowed him to come back multiple times before delivering the line: “Suck it, Pedro!” Pascal was also nominated for the award, hence Culkin’s good-natured joke towards him and why Pascal threw a bit of humor back at the Emmys.
