Warner Bros. has pushed back Mickey 17 almost a full year, as the sci-fi movie from Parasite director Bong Joon-ho will now drop on January 31, 2025. Previously, the film starring Robert Pattinson was supposed to premiere next month before Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire took over its release date.
According to Variety, Mickey 17 was initially moved off its March 29, 2024 release date to give the production additional time after being affected by the Hollywood strikes last year. In addition, the new 2025 debut reportedly gives the sci-fi flick the opportunity to debut on IMAX screens. The IMAX schedule is apparently filled up until then.
While January seems like a dead period in North America, Variety notes that the Lunar New Year serves as a prominent theater window internationally. Warner Bros. might be hoping that Joon-ho’s first feature film since 2019’s Parasite will do especially well outside the United States, especially considering his last project was a foreign movie.
Joon-ho revealed Mickey 17 back in December 2022. The film is based on a book called Mickey7, which follows a man on an ice world who can clone himself. Pattinson previously talked about Mickey 17, stating, “…it’s like nothing I’ve ever done before.” Next year could be a big year for the actor, as The Batman 2 is also slated for October 3, 2025.
