“I went in there thinking it was all going to be about my dad and then [Kurt Russell], my stepdad who raised me,” he said.

He went on to admit: “It was totally flipped on its head: My mother was the one that came up the most, my mother was the one that I had almost the most trauma about, interestingly enough.”

After the episode aired, Oliver says he is “afraid” to speak of trauma “even more” because “everything is taken so far out of context.”

“If you listen to the whole thing, it’s more about sort of my child feelings in that moment rather than me and how I feel about Mom as a parent,” he said before praising his mum.

“I don’t know who I would be without my mother,” he said.

“I can’t even fathom it. The love that I have for her and the respect and the reverence that I have for her is beyond anything. So it was just, you know, completely taken out of context.”

Having now faced the “repercussions,” the scandal is now “over,” with Oliver warning his audience not to “pay attention to that bull—“.

Oliver says that trauma is a buzzword, adding, “You say that word and immediately it inflames everything. There was no trauma coming from my mother’s you know … the way she raised me in any way whatsoever.”

“You know, you’re speaking from a 5, 6-year-old person. That’s what I was doing. Without her, again, I’d be nothing.”

The actor concluded: “You never want to make anyone feel bad, and you know I’m in retrospect… I’m just gonna shut the f–k up from now on. I’m not. I’m not really, I can’t help it.”

During the initial episode, Oliver said he often felt “unprotected” by his mother, adding: “She would be working and away, or she had new boyfriends that I didn’t really like. She would be living her life.”

Oliver maintained that Hawn was “an amazing mother,” but he feels that as a child without his father in the picture, he “needed her to be there, and she just wasn’t sometimes.”

In 2018, Hawn admitted she had made parenting mistakes in the past: “We do the best we can as mothers,” she told People

“Certainly, as a mother, I’ve made mistakes. We all do, we all will. But the most important thing is to stay authentic and true to yourself and hope that you show by example, not by what you say but by what you do.”
