NYCC ’24: STAR TREK news round-up

During New York Comic Con’s Star Trek Universe panel on Saturday, Paramount made several announcements about the franchise’s future, while premiering exclusive clips from upcoming episodes. It was revealed the forthcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is currently filming in Toronto, has already been renewed for a second season.

Additionally, Emmy Award-winning She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany will have a recurring role on the show’s first season. Details about her role weren’t disclosed, but Maslany joins an ensemble cast that also includes Holly Hunter as the school chancellor, Paul Giamatti as the lead villain, and Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, Mary Wiseman, and Oded Fehr reprising their roles from previous Star Trek projects.

Star Trek: Section 31, the upcoming Paramount+ original movie starring Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, landed a release date: Friday, January 24. Character posters were released to celebrate the date.

Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) will guest star in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. As with Maslany, his character was not named, but he will be playing a legacy character. A clip from the premiere of the third season, which will debut in early 2025, was also released, showing Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise in the immediate aftermath of the second season finale’s cliffhanger.

Speaking of clips, a new sneak peek at Star Trek: Lower Decks season five was released. 

The final season, which you can read our review of here, will premiere with two (of 10) episodes on Thursday, October 24, and be released weekly before concluding on December 19. The official key art, parodying the poster for the season’s corresponding movie Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, was unveiled.

In further Star Trek news from New York Comic Con, IDW Publishing revealed connecting covers for the upcoming crossover event Lore War by J.J. Lendl.

The story will kick off with an eponymous one-shot by writers Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Christopher Cantwell, with artist Davide Tinto, on April 2, 2025. You can check out interior art at the official Star Trek website, and have until February 24 to pre-order it from your local comic shop.
