Nya! Nyan! New NYAIGHT OF THE LIVING CAT trailer looks purr-fect

Crunchyroll has unleashed a fresh Nyaight of the Living Cat trailer and some purr-fect key art, which pays homage to its source material—not the manga, but George A. Romero‘s zombie movie classic Night of the Living Dead (just check out the title card). As the official PR cleverly states, the third official trailer for the upcoming anime series “is not kitten around.”

What is Nyiaght of the Living Cat about?

The all-new post-apocalyptic comedy anime series is based on the original manga Nyaight of the Living Cat, written by Hawkman and illustrated by Mecha-Roots. In Japan, Mag Garden has published the manga series in their shōnen magazine, Monthly Comic Garden, since October 5, 2020, and collected the individual issues into tankōbon volumes, with the first one released on May 10, 2021. An English version is available from Seven Seas Entertainment under the title Night of the Living Cat.

The anime series is being crafted by the talented team at OLM, known for the fan-favorite anime adaptations of Pokémon and The Apothecary Diaries, and helmed by the iconic Takashi Miike, who’s famous for Ichi the Killer, Audition, and 13 Assassins.

“Run! The adorable cats are here,” reads the show’s official logline. “In 20XX, the world is dominated by cats. A virus which turns anyone who touches a cat into a cat has spread into a worldwide nyandemic. Cats rub against people, turning them into cats. Can humanity fight their urge to pet cats to survive in this cat-ridden world?”

What talent is attached to the new series?

Additionally, Crunchyroll has announced exciting new additions to the cast, including Tomoko Miyadera (YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master), Kazuyuki Okitsu (Fire Force), Atsumi Tanezaki (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End), Satoshi Tsuruoka (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation), Hiroshi Naka (Delicious in Dungeon), Toshiyuki Morikawa (2019’s Fruits Basket), Tessho Genda (Kaiju No. 8), and Shigeru Chiba (One Piece).

Anime fans should also prepare for an incredible soundtrack! The iconic Japanese glam rock band The Yellow Monkey, who disbanded in 2004 and reformed in 2016, will perform the show’s opening theme “Cat City,” while the rock trio WANIMA will deliver the ending theme “Matatabi.”
