Halloween is right around the corner, but do you have a costume yet?
We’re sure everyone will be musician Chappell Roan or fictional character Beetlejuice this year, so you should definitely try to be something unique.
The Caller-Times came up with 10 Corpus Christi-themed costumes that’ll make you the talk of the night. Make sure you let them know we helped you out with your cool outfit.
Billie Jean
Back in 1985, a film starring Helen Slater and Christian Slater (no relation) was filmed at several locations in Corpus Christi.
For those not ready to sport a pixie-style haircut, grab a short blonde wig to match Helen Slater’s titular character. Try to find a blue and purple vest wetsuit and pair it with a dark pair of harem pants.
Bird watcher
Corpus Christi has been known as the “Birdiest City in America” for quite some time. And if you don’t believe that, look up on the overhead power lines next time you’re at the intersection of Staples Street and Saratoga Boulevard.
Go out and find a flappy, comfortable hat. The color doesn’t matter, but khaki is a go-to hue. A breezy button-up shirt tucked into cargo shorts and a pair of binoculars will also be necessary. Feel free to attach a fake bird on your shoulder or add some bird excrement on your hat for giggles.
Boat ‘N Net
There’s probably a good handful of people who are still in mourning since Boat ‘N Net closed in 2023. It’s time to bring it back from the dead for your potential Halloween costume.
Should you dress up as a shrimp? A fish? The delicious tartar sauce? You could even create a makeshift boat out of a cardboard box and throw a fishing net on you to be a bit more specific. If you want to go for the gold, recreate the menu screen — including the infamous PVC pipe and doorbell.
Farrah Fawcett
In 2009, the world lost a literal angel — Farrah Fawcett. Born in Corpus Christi, the actress is great person to dress up as.
First and foremost, you need to make sure you have her iconic feathered hair. After that, you have a plethora of costumes to choose from. Don a red swimsuit, a white button-up tucked into white shorts, a sparkly silver gown or anything that screams ’70s fashion.
Mascot
In Corpus Christi, there are several mascots representing the city. You have Rusty the Hook and Sammy the Seagull repping the Corpus Christi Hooks, Stinger Ray of the Corpus Christi IceRays, Izzy the Islander at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Valdar the Viking at Del Mar College.
We realize purchasing a mascot outfit would definitely cost you a pretty penny, so we suggest you simplify it. For example, dress up in a TAMU-CC tank top with a pair of dark blue and green shorts to personify the university’s mascot. Or go purchase a Hooks jersey and hat and put on gray makeup to dress up as Rusty the Hook.
Raccoon
South of Oso Parkway, there is a gaze of raccoons that goes viral on social media every now and then when people record them in the nighttime. These adorable, furry animals just want to be friends (and eat garbage) so dressing up as one would show respect to the mammal.
Head to your local retail store and purchase a gray outfit, and then head to a costume shop to find a ear headband that resembles raccoon ears. If you’re able to find a tail, grab it or you’ll have to make one out of faux fur and stuffing. Make sure to add the black rings around your eyes, a black spot on your nose and some cute whiskers to complete the look.
Seagull
Some see seagulls as innocent creatures while others see them as rats with wings. With that in mind, feel free to either be a cute seagull or a terrifying one for Halloween.
This outfit will take some time, but it’ll be worth it. Find a white hoodie you no longer need and go out and buy some white felt. Cut the felt into feathers and then sew, or hot glue, them to the hoodie. Going for a cute seagull? Sprinkle some glitter on the wings and walk around with a bag of chips. Wanting to be scary? Throw some red paint on the wings and around your mouth while holding a fake body part.
Selena
We couldn’t make a costume list without including the fashion icon herself, Selena. The Queen of Tejano has plenty of looks to replicate for the holiday.
The easiest route would be to wear an outfit similar to the purple jumpsuit she wore at the Houston Astrodome. You could also wear a white bustier with high-waisted white pants and white fringe boots. Either way, make sure you have her iconic red lips on.
‘Surfing Jesus’
Located at the First United Methodist Church on North Shoreline Boulevard, “Surfing Jesus” overlooks Corpus Christi Bay. The statue’s actual name is “It is I.” It is a representation of Jesus Christ standing at the front of a small boat, halting the storm on the Sea of Galilee from gospel accounts.
But with a name like Surfing Jesus, how can you cannot dress up as the statue? Find a beige tunic with a red sash for the outfit. Then create a makeshift boat, or even bring along a surfboard to emphasize the statue’s nickname.
Tourist
Corpus Christi is a tourist town. With our many beaches, local attractions, tons of restaurants and bars, there is so much for people to do when they visit us. But, we locals know how to spot tourists easily.
First, make sure you put some sunscreen on your face, but don’t blend it. Similar to the bird watcher costume, you want to wear some cargo shorts. But instead you should have a beachy-themed shirt on and some older-looking sneakers. Purchase a map of the city and a fanny pack, and you’re all set.
