Nintendo game emulator tops iPhone app store charts

An emulator offering access to a plethora of Nintendo games has surged to the top of the iPhone App Store’s free downloads list. The Delta app enables users to relive classics from NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS platforms. This spike in popularity follows Apple’s recent policy change permitting video game emulator apps on its storefront, a move influenced by European pressure for increased openness regarding third-party app stores and emulator use.

Notably, Nintendo has refrained from commenting on the decision, despite its typical stance against piracy. While Nintendo offers a limited selection of classic games through its subscription service, Delta provides access to a broader range, including N64 and Game Boy Advance titles. However, Apple recently removed another emulator app based on existing code, indicating a limit to their support for ‘retro’ consoles. Delta’s inclusion of Nintendo DS, discontinued just a decade ago, pushes the boundaries of Apple’s definition, prompting queries about Nintendo’s stance on the matter.
