The story begins with Diana awakening from a centuries-long sleep to find her friends long gone and Earth reduced to a wasteland overrun by mutated creatures.
In her quest to uncover what happened to the planet she once vowed to protect, Wonder Woman returns to Themyscira, leading a group of humans in search of sanctuary. Tragically, Diana soon discovers that her beloved mother has become one of these grotesque mutants.
Wonder Woman’s Mother Turns Into Mutated Monster That Is All Kinds of WRONG
Hippolyta’s mutated form is nothing short of sickening. While her face and upper torso retain the timeless beauty of an Amazon, everything below her waist is a nightmare. Her legs have been replaced by a massive, slug-like lower half that looms over Diana. This grotesque transformation defies easy description, but the closest comparison would be a mass of pink, fleshy folds draped over one another, adorned with what appear to be the white hair-like structures typically found on caterpillars and other invertebrates. To make matters worse, her gelatinous form is riddled with open lacerations, offering a horrifying view of her internal organs, such as her intestines.
When I first saw the mutated Hippolyta, I wanted to forget it instantly, but I couldn’t stop staring—a true testament to Johnson’s brilliant artwork. What made the image even more sickening was that this wasn’t just some random beast roaming the Earth; it was Diana’s mother. The retention of Hippolyta’s human-like upper body only heightened the horror, compounding the emotional impact. The flashbacks throughout the story, showcasing Diana and her mother’s relationship, made this revelation even more hard-hitting and devastating.
