Mojo Nixon, who played Toad in the 1993 Mario film, has passed away

31 years ago, Super Mario Bros. released in theaters. The film featured many different faces that have become familiar to Nintendo fans in the decades since. One of them is Mojo Nixon. In the film, he played Toad, one of the characters that would help the Mario brothers with foiling President Koopa’s evil plans.

Although Nintendo fans know him the most as Toad in the movie, he is also known for being a singer, songwriter and radio host. His career as a musician, combined with wanting less money than Tom Waits, the production team’s preferred choice for the role of Toad, is how he ultimately got the role in the film. It isn’t his only appearance in a film either. He played Jerry Lee Lewis’ drummer in “Great Balls of Fire” and also appeared in a 1994 film adaptation of “Car 54, Where Are You?”, a television show that originally aired in the 60s.

That all said, there is some tragic news to report to you today. Mojo Nixon has sadly passed away at the age of 66. He passed away from a cardiac arrest he had while sleeping aboard a country music cruise. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, a sister, a brother and a granddaughter. We hope Mojo Nixon rests and peace, and we send our condolences to his friends and family.
