Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird address wedding rumours

American sports stars Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have shot down rumours they secretly got married this week, after sharing pictures from a wedding in Wales.

The engaged couple posted a series of loved-up snaps together from their time at their friends’ wedding, which sent the rumour mill into overdrive.

Former professional basketball player Bird, 43, addressed the speculation on her Instagram story on Thursday, apologising to fans.

“PSA: Megan and I did not get married,” she wrote.

She added: “Sorry for the confusion. I guess the fits were too good.”

“Congrats Z and Jess,” she finished, having attended the wedding of soccer players Jess Fishlock and Tziarra King.

On the evening, Bird wore a white fitted blazer and headpiece – which fans may have mistaken for bridal wear.

“Sue-ted & Booted ✨,” Bird captioned a post.

The couple have been engaged since 2020. They first met at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

In October 2020, Bird confirmed their engagement sharing a shot of Rapinoe, 38, proposing to her as they swam in a pool at an idyllic destination.

Rapinoe was one of the highest-paid players of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup .

While she earns $US700,000 (approx. $1.03m) on the field, most of her income is from her lucrative off-field earnings at $6.3 million (approx. $9.3m).

According to a new report from SponsorUnited, Rapinoe shared the most branded social media posts of any other women’s soccer player in the lead up to the world cup.
