Meet the county commission candidates for Madison Co. District 3

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — As voters head to the polls on Tuesday, they’ll have a lot of boxes to check. Republican voters in Madison County’s District 3 will be asked to select a candidate for Madison County Commission.

Incumbent two-term County Commissioner Craig Hill is facing opposition from long-time Madison County resident Dusty Yarbrough.

“Our commission works well and there’s just not a reason to change, we have a great team right now,” Commissioner Hill told News 19.

His opponent, Dusty Yarbrough, said he isn’t afraid of taking on the two-term commissioner.

“I love a challenge and, you know, here we are,” Yarbrough said.

Both candidates are vying for a spot as the Republican candidate on the November ballot for County Commission District 3.

Both candidates have placed dozens of campaign signs throughout Madison County’s District 3.

Hill told News 19, “We’re excited to run on our record… We have continuously improved our communities and we’re excited to get to say that and we’re looking forwards to four more years.”

Hill was first elected in to the District 3 seat in 2016 and won his re-election bid in 2020. However, his competitor, Dusty Yarbrough told News 19 that he believes its time for a change.

“When you sit and you see things go on that need to be addressed and you watch the politics play out, you know, you feel like you’ve been led to do something about it and be a difference maker,” Yarbrough said. “I’m different, and and a different type of elected official than what we have and you know just build that perception back and that trust back… I want everybody to get out and vote and let their voice be heard because it will be heard if I’m in office.”

Yarbrough was born and raised in Madison County, and it’s where he is currently raising his children. He told News 19 that based on his experience of working for the last 24 years as a water treatment operator for the city of Huntsville, he understands what its like to work for taxpayers.

“I’m a small town guy that loves his community and his district,” he said.

District 3 includes New Hope, Owens Cross Roads, Gurley, Hampton Cove and parts of Redstone Arsenal. Both candidates agree that infrastructure work is important in these growing areas.

“My first day in I’m putting all my effort into ‘what can we do?’ and ‘let’s start paving roads’ and ‘let’s start fixing roads and drainages’, and let’s go to work,” Yarbrough said.

“Safety is our top priority and our roads have continuously improved” Commissioner Craig Hill told News 19. Hill said he’s excited about the upcoming $56.8 million dollar Little Cove Road expansion project.

“We’re really excited about being able to improve travel routes in our district,” Hill added.

In his interview with News 19, Hill also touted recent projects like his project to bring broadband internet to students in parts of the county.

“To be able to do a project like we completed with the rural broadband project, we’re bringing internet to students that will be able now complete class work that previously couldn’t,” he said. “So our investment in our community is evident, our heart has been here you know I’ve been here all my life, and to be part of a commission that’s forward moving at this time – our relationship with Huntsville is wonderful, our relationship with the State is wonderful, our commission works well and there’s just not a reason to change.”

Polls around the state will be open from 7:00am to 7:00pm.

District 3 isn’t the only Madison County Commission seat on Tuesday’s ballot. Democratic voters in District 6 will decide between incumbent County Commissioner Violet Edwards and JesHenry Malone.
