Maverick unveils STUDENT GOVERNMENT
Mad Cave Studios’ young adult imprint Maverick have announced Student Government, a new graphic novel written by Dave Justus and Lilah Sturges, with art by Joe Eisma. Due out March 11, 2025, the book follows four students at Halcyon Burke, America’s second-oldest university, as they try to save their school from being demolished.
At America’s second-oldest university, four earnest, clever, and desperate teens on the interim student government exploit a charter loophole in an effort to save their school from being demolished, facing down pressures on campus and escalating hostility from the Board of Regents in a story both hilarious and heartfelt.
The book marks the latest collaboration between Justus and Sturges, who previously worked together on the 2015 fantasy series Public Relations. Justus (whose credits include the graphic novelization of The Wolf Among Us, Everafter, and the interactive fiction app Lifeline) said in an interview with ComicBook.com that he has been friends with Sturges and Eisma since meeting them at a Free Comic Book Day event in Dallas in 2009, and that Student Government was conceived shortly afterwards.
It was intended to be a mature readers title, until Mad Cave editor-in-chief Mike Marts, and others at the company suggested it would make for a better YA book. The creative team ultimately agreed “we didn’t have to sacrifice any of the comedy or the politics,” and that the book “gained story threads of courage, compassion, optimism, and all the different things that the word ‘family’ can mean.”
Sturges further describes it as “a book for everyone who likes comedy, bunnies, and justice being served,” while Eisma says Mad Cave “were our strongest cheerleaders, and shepherded everything in the right direction. I’m so happy with the final result, I think readers are truly in for a treat with a story that is charming, funny and heartwarming in all the best ways.”
Bookstore pre-orders are now live for the Student Government graphic novel which will retail at 180 pages for $14.99 on March 11. For more in the meantime, head to ComicBook.com for the full interview with the creative team and an interior preview, as well as Mad Cave’s own page for the book here.
