Matthew Perry death: Matthew Perry’s cause of death aged 54 revealed in autopsy report

Matthew Perry‘s cause of death has been revealed.

According to a report from the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner (DME), Perry – who was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home on October 28 local time – died due to “the acute affects of ketamine”.

“Contributing factors in Mr. Perry’s death include drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder),” part of the report reads.

“The manner of death is accident.”

Ketamine, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, is a “dissociative anesthetic that has some hallucinogenic effects”.

Perry was declared dead aged 54 on October 28 (October 29 in Australia) after emergency services responded to a “medical emergency” at his home.

The Friends star had long been vocal about his battle with addiction, and in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, he opened up about his journey to sobriety.

”I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side again,” he told People when the memoir was released.

“I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction – to write it all down. I was pretty certain that it would help people if I did.”

Best known as Chandler Bing in the ’90s sitcom, Perry’s Friends co-stars – whom he said were “understanding” and “patient” as his addiction battle heightened as they filmed early seasons – released a heartfelt tribute days after his death.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer said in a joint statement issued to People.

“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able.”

They signed off: “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Perry was laid to rest at a private funeral on November 3 (November 4 in Australia).

The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner (DME) determined the cause of death for 54-year-old actor Matthew Langford Perry as the acute effects of ketamine. Contributing factors in Mr. Perry’s death include drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder). The manner of death is accident. 

On October 28, at approximately 1600 hours, Mr. Perry was found unresponsive in the pool at his residence. After 911 was called, paramedics responded to the scene and death was pronounced.

DME responded, conducted a scene investigation and then transported Mr. Perry’s body to the DME’s Forensic Science Center for examination.

On October 29, the deputy medical examiner completed an autopsy on Mr. Perry. Following the completion and receipt of relevant test results, the cause and manner of death were certified.
