Margot Robbie’s husband Tom Ackerley: How he became one of Hollywood’s biggest producers | Explainer

We all know and love Margot Robbie, Australia’s own superstar, but we don’t know much about her husband of eight years, Tom Ackerley

Ackerley is no stranger to the hustle, working his way up in Hollywood from a floor runner, fetching coffee for celebs, to being an executive producer on some of this year’s biggest films.

Let’s take a look at his humble beginnings.

Long before he met Robbie, he had a role in the Harry Potter series, starring as a Slytherin student in the first three instalments of the films.

While Robbie was on The Graham Norton Show in 2020, she exposed his Harry Potter role that had previously remained unknown.

“My husband is in the Harry Potter movies. I know I was like, ‘Had you told me sooner we would’ve been married very quickly,’ ” Robbie quipped.

“But he was an extra when he was a little kid – he was one of the Slytherin extras when Draco pushes some kids out of the way to see Buckbeak in the third book. He pushes my husband out of the way.”

In 2011, aged 21, Ackerley began his climb to being a director, working as a floor runner on British drama series, The Hour and the comedy film, Big Fat Gypsy Gangster.

His time spent looking after cast and crew, tending to any need on set that would aid the shoot’s progress developed his career in the industry and by 2012 he was the third assistant director.

Continuing his crawl to the top, he worked as the first assistant director on The Borderlands in 2013, but that would not be the highlight of his year.

Instead, whilst working on the set of Suite Française he met his future wife, Robbie.

She was acting alongside Michelle Williams and was enjoying her life as a single, successful actress.

Speaking to Vogue in 2016, Robbie revealed “the best-looking guy in London” caught her attention.

“I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit,” she said. “And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, Oh, he would never love me back.

“Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him. And then it happened, and I was like, Of course we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.”

In 2014, Ackerley, Robbie and their friends Sophia Kerr and Josey McNamara, co-founded the production company LuckyChap Entertainment which went on to make the films I, TonyaPromising Young Woman and Barbie.

In a private ceremony on the Gold Coast, the pair got married. They hadn’t even announced their engagement yet.

Following constant rumours that the couple had tied the knot, Robbie confirmed the news in an Instagram post.

Over the past eight years, the couple have stayed relatively lowkey and out of the spotlight, save for a few red carpet appearances together.

A source told E! News in 2018 that Robbie “values her privacy and prefers to stay out of the spotlight.” She and Ackerley, the insider said, “are inseparable and the best of friends.”

Ackerley would go on to produce LuckyChap Entertainment films, and in 2021 produced the television series Maid, which was hugely successful.

When speaking with MovieMaker Magazine, he said their goal was to create female-focused movies that championed women.

“If we can be a company that curates new and emerging talent, and can bring them through and provide that platform to do bigger movies and studio movies, that’s ideally what we want to do,” he said.
