Macon women come together for community wellness event

MACON, Ga. — While we’re a few months removed from National Women’s Health Awareness Month, it’s never a bad idea for women to continue to prioritize their health and wellness.

No one knows that more than the Girls Dig Deeper Initiative (GDDI), as they partnered with Piedmont Macon and Macon-Bibb County Recreating to hold a community wellness event for women on Saturday.

“We’re holding this event primarily for women to help them access valuable health resources and improve the overall well-being of our community,” GDDI founder and executive director Najiva Timothee said.

The event, held at the Rosa Jackson Community Center on Maynard Street, invited women from around Macon and Central Georgia to learn more about important topics relating to women’s health.

Topics they planned on discussing include the following:

• Stroke awareness and prevention

• Maternity services

• Nutrition

• Blood pressure checks

• BMI and Hip-to-Waist ratio checks

• Breast cancer information and a self-screening tutorial

• Heart health

• Eating healthy on a budget

The GDDI received $15,500 in funding from the Macon Violence Prevention program (MVP) to help set up programs like this. 

Most recently, the initiative had a meeting with girls between the ages of 13-17 to discuss self-discipline and a variety of other topics.

The event ran from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
