‘Love Is Blind’s 10 Worst Family Moments

Love Is Blind Season 8 is plodding toward the finish line, bringing with it a handful of watercooler moments, as well as questionable couples. While many of the couples on the series bring their own drama – with differing opinions on politics, sexuality, trauma, and religion – family members of contestants are also known to get in on the experiment. But not all families are as supportive as Brett Brown‘s when he introduced them to Tiffany Pennywell, making us believe in love again.

Some family members don’t want to meet the new partner at all, while others just don’t want to be on camera. Some are awkward or skeptical, which is to be expected in an accelerated process like Love Is Blind. Most come around at the end to support their children, but some of the following family members are downright rude to their son or daughter’s love interest. While we’re focusing on Love Is Blind U.S., Jasmine’s mother meeting Bobby Johnson on Love Is Blind UK deserves a shout-out!

Kwame’s Mother Doesn’t Meet Chelsea

Season 4

Image via Netflix

Fans were skeptical of this Season 4 couple from the get-go. Kwame Appiah seemed to want to propose to Micah Lussier in the pods, but ended up engaged to Chelsea Griffin when Micah opted to continue her relationship with Paul Peden. Due to their seemingly contradictory personality types and goals (like where to live), viewers didn’t have high hopes the couple would make it. The honeymoon, during which Micah and Kwame flirted, was also a red flag, with fans just not buying into Kwame’s desire to be with Chelsea.

When it was time to meet the families, Chelsea talked up her father to Kwame like he was evil, even leaving the episode on a cliffhanger. However, upon the actual meeting, Chelsea’s father was very sweet and immediately gave the couple his blessing. The same can’t be said for Kwame’s side of the family. Kwame warned Chelsea that his mother was not happy about the prospect of them getting married via a show, or perhaps even at all, and that she didn’t want to meet her son’s future bride. Kwame’s mother was so against the concept, in fact, that her voice seemed to be removed from Kwame’s phone call with her in the final edit. Kwame’s siblings, however, were more supportive and showed up for his nuptials. In the end, Kwame and Chelsea proved everyone wrong, and they are still going strong.

Danielle’s Family Meets Nick

Season 2

Image via Netflix

When Danielle Ruhl brought Nick Thompson to meet her family, he knew he would be in for some tough questions, as to be expected in a process such as Love Is Blind. Throughout the season, Danielle was presented as a more quirky foil to Nick’s straight-arrow persona, and those traits carried over into this Season 2 family meeting. In a more lighthearted, yet 100% cringey moment, Nick got the tough questions he was looking for from Danielle’s parents, just not the ones he expected.

Danielle’s dad is the first to bring up that a healthy marriage includes a healthy sex life, with his wife enthusiastically backing him up. Danielle’s sister chimes in to point out a hickey on Nick’s neck; he’s chill enough to roll with the punches, but viewers cringed in awkward TMI. Danielle’s brother, not to be left out of the conversation, asks the new couple how sexually active they are, prompting Danielle’s mother to encourage having sex before marriage. Nick and Danielle, both mortified, laugh, blush, and wish for this line of questioning to end (just like the rest of us).

Ashley’s Father Meets Tyler

Season 7

Image via Netflix

At first, the relationship between Tyler Francis and Ashley Adionser was one to root for. Sparking up a romance and bonding over shared values and religion, Tyler and Ashley had viewers swooning from top to bottom. That is, until life (i.e., social media) caught up to the show in real time. News spread, along with receipts, that Tyler was hiding some pretty damaging information. So, instead of continuing to buy into their love story, fans were just waiting for the shoe to drop in the episodes.

During the season, Tyler was exposed online for having several children without telling Ashley about it. When she found out, he only told her bits and pieces of the truth, fabricating most of the story to appear more removed from it. When Tyler met Ashley’s father, the similarities were concerning to viewers; Ashley didn’t have a great relationship growing up with her mostly absent father. When he broached the subject of family with Tyler, Tyler’s enthusiasm for having kids with Ashley (without a thought for his others) brought his lies to a whole new level of villainy.

Shake’s Family Meets Deepti

Season 2

Image via Netflix

Viewers already had a controversial impression of Abishek “Shake” Chatterjee, who proposed to fan-favorite Deepti Vempati, due to his shady behavior in the pods. He tried to trick women into revealing their physical attributes, said that he couldn’t be attracted to someone of his ethnicity, and had a general misogynistic view of women and marriage. On the honeymoon, Shake’s negging of Deepti got even worse, with him calling her his aunt and being hyper-critical of her appearance.

While Shake made a decent impression on Deepti’s parents, he couldn’t help but show his true colors around his own family. In a one-on-one with his mother, Shake revealed that he was missing that romantic, “animalistic” attraction to Deepti. Shake’s mother, a real MVP, rightfully pointed out that Deepti is a wonderful person and doesn’t deserve any less than someone who gives her 100%, identifying more with her son’s fiancée than him. Thankfully, Deepti ultimately says no to Shake at the altar, but hopefully Shake’s mom “shook” some sense into him.

David’s Sister Doesn’t Meet Lauren

Season 8

Image via Netflix

The current season of Love Is Blind, which dropped its first batch of episodes appropriately on Valentine’s Day, featured one of the most repetitive excuses in reality TV history. If viewers were to play a drinking game, taking a sip every time walking red flag David Bettenburg mentioned his sister as an excuse for why he found his relationship with Lauren O’Brien difficult, they would be on the floor in less than ten minutes! Granted, David and his sister surely created a close relationship after losing their mother to cancer, but David blaming her for not wanting to marry Lauren was just an excuse and infuriated many viewers.

To rub salt in Lauren’s emotional wounds, David’s sister never made an appearance on the series (as of Episode 12). With David’s consistent mention of his sister, Lauren was eager to meet her and reclaim some of the narrative spiraling behind her back. Lauren had even written David’s sister a letter explaining her situation and love for David, which he neglected to pass along. David likely never intended for the two to meet, even claiming that he didn’t want to waste his sister’s time with Lauren. For someone who didn’t even show up on the series, David’s sister is the most notorious – and allegedly nefarious – person of this season!

Nancy’s Family Confronts Bartise

Season 3

Image via Netflix

In the pods, Bartise Bowden was interested in two women, Raven Ross and Nancy Rodriguez. When Raven ditched Bartise for Sikiru “SK” Alagbada (which sadly didn’t work out), he proposed to loverlorn Nancy. It was clear from early on that the couple was not going to mesh well. Bartise still held a flame for Raven (especially once he saw her in person), and Nancy was playing a more advanced game of life with her properties, business endeavors, and financial security. The two also had differing views on difficult subjects like abortion.

Bartise first meets Nancy’s father and brothers, who immediately take him outside to grill him. Nancy’s brothers ask why Bartise chose to propose to Nancy, calling him out for the holes in his story and generic answers. Next up was meeting Nancy’s mother, where Bartise also struggled to come up with satisfactory answers, especially on the financial front. While both meetings were tense, neither compared to the aftermath of Bartise saying no to Nancy at the altar. Nancy’s mother questioned Bartise’s decision, and Nancy’s brother, Steve, broke down in tears and confronted Bartise in a heated verbal exchange that had to be broken up by producers.

Shaina’s Family Meets Kyle

Season 2

Image via Netflix

In the pods, Shaina Hurley insisted that she belonged with suitor Shayne Jansen, but accepted Kyle Abram‘s proposal after Shayne paired up with Natalie Lee. Already at the disadvantage of not being who Shaina really wanted to be with, Kyle was also an atheist – which starkly contrasted Shaina’s firm Christianity. On the honeymoon, the pair’s differences and Shaina’s disinterest in Kyle pushed her to leave him in Mexico, and the viewers on a cliffhanger.

Shaina doubled back on her decision to leave Kyle, bringing him to meet her family, and her brother started the interrogation. When meeting Shaina’s family, Kyle’s discomfort originally manifested in him laughing and making jokes that no one else appreciated, but he eventually found his rhythm. Until – record scratch – Shaina’s brother asked Kyle if he was “a godly man.” When Kyle expressed his views on religion, the tension was palpable and the glances between Shaina’s family members made it clear that Kyle was a no for them. In confessional, Shaina’s mother even stated that she would not be giving her blessing to the duo.

Bliss’ Father Meets Zack

Season 4

Image via Netflix

After a tumultuous false-start with Season 4 mean girl Irina Solomonova, Zack Goytowski found his happily ever after with Bliss Poureetezadi. Now a fan-favorite couple, Bliss and Zack faced their fair share of hurdles during their time on Love Is Blind. The major one being Zack initially proposing and going on a honeymoon with Irina after what was likely the most cringey reveal in Love Is Blind history. However, when Zack finally broke things off with Irina, fans were praying to the gods of love that Bliss would grant him a second chance.

Bliss and Zack finally met and hashed things out, and viewers witnessed a beautiful love story. Zack’s family loved Bliss, and Bliss’ mother was impressed with Zack. When meeting Bliss’ father, though, Zack faced a tough nut to crack. The men were awkwardly unable to find common ground to relate to one another; Zack talked about the law, and Bliss’ dad was interested in fishing and golfing. The meeting only got more heated from there, with Bliss’ father questioning the couple’s engagement and passive aggressively wishing them luck. Bliss, however, stood her ground, backed her relationship with Zack, and called her father out for his rudeness and patronizing comments like “don’t fool yourself.” Other Love Is Blind couples can take note of Bliss’ resolve.

Monica’s Sister Meets Joey

Season 8

Image via Netflix

Season 8’s Joey Leveille and Monica Danús seemed to be on the same wavelength, both with quirky, infectious energy that was palpable in the pods. The honeymoon went smoothly and Monica was excited and nervous to bring Joey to meet her family – who, she had mentioned, share a communal sock bin, to Joey’s horror. The family meet-and-greet started off well, with Joey’s enthusiasm blending in with Monica’s parents. Until Monica’s sister decided to chime in with interrogative questions and an obvious dislike for Joey. To make matters even more complicated, Monica’s sister is dating a guy Monica went on a date with (and followed up by recommending that he date her sister instead).

A heart-to-heart between sisters after a tense group meeting sheds more light on the sibling rivalry. Monica stood her ground, and backed her relationship with Joey, despite her sister’s list of excuses. At first, Monica’s sister mentioned Joey not being Monica’s type, either physically or energetically. Then, she moved on to not trusting Joey, since he’s essentially a stranger. Finally, being older, Monica’s sister thought that she would be the first one to get married, seemingly jealous of Monica’s swift relationship. Later, Joey rightfully called out the jealousy coming from Monica’s sister and encouraged a dialogue. The three later met for engagement photos, which put the tension to rest, for now.

Marissa’s Mother Meets Ramses

Season 7

Image via Netflix

Ramses Prashad and Marissa George from Season 7 made headlines for their differing views on birth control, politics, and the military. Marissa, coming from a military family, served herself and takes pride in her achievements. She was more energetic than Ramses, and dealt with health issues that affected their physical intimacy. Ramses, on the other hand, disliked the military, wanted Marissa to be calmer, and to make sure they were having sex regularly (despite not wanting to wear condoms). The two butted heads on most deal-breaking topics, but got engaged in the pods anyway.

When Ramses met Marissa’s family, including her mother and siblings, Ramses and the viewers got a lot more than they expected. Plenty of families of Love Is Blind contestants have disapproved or been skeptical of the new couples, but Marissa’s mom took disapproval to a new level. If looks could kill, Ramses would have been eliminated several times over; as he talked, Marissa’s mother sized him up, from the way he spoke to what he was wearing. And she wasn’t shy about pointing out what she disliked about both Ramses and Marissa, even going so far as calling Marissa a “b***h” (a step way too far for some fans). While viewers might have thought it unnecessarily harsh of Marissa’s mom to treat Ramses this way (and let’s be honest, she was definitely rude), she was ultimately correct in her assessment that the two should not be together.
