The curtain falls on Loki Season 2, and what a spectacular conclusion to the story! I finally got a chance to watch the final episode, and I absolutely loved how this season wrapped up the story! From the beginning with the aptly titled “Glorious Purpose” episode, the series spirals into a time-twisting narrative that wraps up Loki’s latest MCU journey in an extraordinary way. In the finale, Loki achieves his glorious purpose through a selfless act, finding himself alone on a throne, bearing the immense responsibility of holding the multiverse together.
The episode cleverly intertwines with the series premiere, creating an ouroboros effect where the end circles back to the beginning. As Loki confronts the breakdown of the Temporal Loom and the erasure of the multiverse, fans watch as he’s trapped in a time loop, much like the film Groundhog Day, reliving centuries to learn what he needs to prevent cosmic catastrophe. In the process, he learns that the TVA’s device is a failsafe to protect the sacred timeline.
Loki finds himself faced with a difficult choice… to save the sacred timeline or choose no existence at all. However, due to being able to control his time slipping and time loop, Loki ends up becoming incredibly powerful, seemingly more powerful than any variant of Kang. So, instead of succumbing to one of the two choices he was given by Kang, he created a third. With his Asgardian magic mixed with the knowledge he learned, Loki personally steps in to hold the multiverse together.
In the end, Loki had to destroy the Temporal Loom so that the TVA and multiverse could be free of Kang. This could easily be Marvel’s way out of not having to use the villain Kang again if they decide to take the Multiverse Saga in a different direction.
The visually stunning sequence of Loki reshaping the multiverse signifies his defiance of He Who Remains’ predetermined mold. That final image we see of Loki sees him awesomely rebuild the multiverse in the form of Yggdrasil, the mythical “World Tree,” which is an arrangement that his father Odin taught him.
Despite Loki’s desire to avoid solitude, he now sits alone for eternity, holding the multiverse together. One question that fans might have is if Loki has the power to change or influence what goes on in the multiverse now that he’s holding it together, but even if he does, I doubt he would. He has become a silent guardian rather than an active participant in mortal affairs. He has become the hero of the story.
A significant shift in Season 2 is the transformation of the TVA from authoritarian workers to heroes. Loki’s sacrifice grants the TVA a second chance to fulfill their own purpose – defending the multiverse against Kang variants. The delicate balance between free will and responsibility becomes the TVA’s ongoing challenge, ensuring they don’t revert to their authoritarian nightmare.
I have no idea what the future holds for Loki or some of the other characters such as Sylvie, Mobius, and Ravonna. The door is definitely open to the continuation of Loki’s story and these characters, but fans can only speculate as to where that could take things. We also know that the events in the story could have major ramifications on the MCU’s future, but again, we can only speculate on what those things could be.
One thing is for sure, Loki Season 2’s finale delivers a powerful and satisfying culmination to the God of Mischief’s journey, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the future of the MCU post-multiverse shakeup.
