Lady Gaga might be one of the biggest pop stars in the world, but she’s at odds with the expectations that are placed on artists today.
The 38-year-old singer delivered a passionate speech after she was honored at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday, March 17. Gaga accepted the Innovator Award during the ceremony, where she opened up about her feelings toward the award and being a pop star.

“I don’t know totally how to think about this because winning an award honoring my entire career at 38 years old is a hard thing to get my head around,” the Grammy Award-winning singer admitted before she explained, “On the one hand, I feel like I’ve been doing this forever, and on the other hand, I know I’m just getting started.” She then told viewers, “So even though the world might consider a woman in her late thirties old for a pop star, which is insane, I promise that I’m just getting warmed up.”
The songstress mentioned her grandmothers and ancestors, who she said “reinvented their destinies with nothing but strength, dreams, and determination,” before she said that they are “the greatest women that I’ve ever known.”
Gaga also thanked her fans — whom she affectionately calls her “little monsters” — as well as a number of musicians that have inspired her. Elton John, David Bowie, Carole King, and Cher were among some of the names on the list, and she even made sure to include a dedication to her “dear friend Tony Bennett,” whom she said “taught [her] to embrace the classics but never be bound by them.”The “Poker Face” singer released her latest album, Mayhem, on Friday, March 7, and it is available on all major music streaming platforms.
