‘Kiranmala And The Kingdom Beyond’ To Be Adapted As Animated TV Show

EXCLUSIVE: Middle grader book series Kiranmala & The Kingdom Beyond is getting the animated television adaptation treatment.

Undone and The Kollective producer Submarine and Rebel Maverick have teamed to create a TV version of Sayantani DasGupta’s book series. DasGupta will adapt the stories with animation writer veteran and Emmy winner Michael Ryan (Wolfboy and the Everything Factory, Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?).

Published by Scholastic, Kiranmala & The Kingdom Beyond debuted in 2018 with The Serpent’s Secret. It won several book awards, with Kiranmala & The Kingdom Beyond: Game of Stars following in 2019 and entering the New York Times bestseller list. A third book, Kiranmala & The Kingdom Beyond: The Chaos Curse, published in 2020, while a spin-off series, Force of Fire, published a year and a third trilogy, The Secrets of the Sky, launched in July last year.

The first book trilogy will be the focus on the TV series. Ryan and DasGupta will write the pilot, with Ryan serving as Head Writer. Submarine Sublime’s co-founder, Bruno Felix, and company development head Phil Molloy will executive produce the kids animated series alongside Rebel Maverick’s Matt Nicholas and Nastassja Kayln, with Head of Development Jane Kim Yang and VP of Development Victoria Nguyen overseeing the firm’s involvement.

The project is set to brought to the international and U.S. market markets this year.

Netherlands-based Submarine (aka Submarine Sublime) has studios in Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Antwerp and London, and counts Prime Video’s scripted animation series Undone, Richard Linklater and Netflix feature Apollo 10 1/2 and European co-produced drama The Kollective on its slate.

We recently revealed Natascha McElhone, Celine Buckens, Felix Mayr and Gregg Sulkin would star in The Kollective, with Hulu boarding in the U.S. and A+E picking up International sales rights, and that Submarine is attached to another major upcoming European drama series, the Alfie Allen-starrer Safe Harbor.

Rebel Maverick — a queer, Afro-Latinx writing and production team of Nicholas and Kayln — has TV and film project in the works with the likes of Sony, George Tillman Jr’s State Street Pictures, Gabrielle Union’s I’ll Have Another Productions, Regina King and Reina King’s Royal Ties Productions, Gina Rodriguez’s I Can & I Will Productions.

It recently executive produced indie horror feature Fanged, which is now in post-production, and is next working on adult anime series Allure: The Evening Primrose, with Grand Slam tennis champion Naomi Osaka set to voice lead and executive produce via her Hana Kuma production banner, as we told you first last month.

Rebel Maverick is represented by Navigation Media Group and Hirsch, Wallerstein, Matlof, Hayum, and Fishman, Michael Ryan is repped by Gotham Group and Sayantani DasGupta is with Triada US Literary Agency.
