King Charles has shared his thanks for the thousands of cards and letters of support he has received since making public his cancer diagnosis.
In a video released Friday evening, the King was seen reading several of the letters of good wishes and was quoted: “Such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”
The video also show the huge postbag full of correspondence from around the world – estimated at 7,000 pieces of post – and explained that a few letters were included each day in the official red box of paperwork sent to the King for his attention.
Charles announced February 5th that he was receiving treatment for cancer, specificity unknown, following diagnosis during earlier treatment for a benign enlarged prostate. He has withdrawn from public engagements since that date, but been seen going to church and meeting with the UK’s prime minister Rishi Sunak.
He previously sent a message of thanks to well-wishers, expressing his delight that his decision to make public his condition had resulted in a surge of the country’s citizens seeking testing for different cancer conditions.
His son Prince Harry travelled from Los Angeles to see him in the week following the announcement. Harry said in an interview last week that he had been “grateful” to spend time with his father, after relations between Harry and other members of the royal family had soured following publication of his revelation-filled memoir Spare in January 2023.
Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, continues to recover from her abdominal surgery, which was announced the same week as her father-in-law’s cancer. She has not made any public statement yet, but her husband Prince William attended the Bafta Film Awards in London last weekend, when he gave his wife’s illness as the reason he hadn’t been able to watch as many of the nominated films as in previous years.
