Jennifer Lopez, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Florence Pugh among stars bringing high-drama fashion to 2024 TIFF red carpet

When one festival ends, another begins! Following the conclusion of the Venice Film Festival last week, celebrities jetted across the globe to Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs until Sept. 15.

Since kicking off on Sept. 5, the 49th annual film festival has been the backdrop for Hollywood’s elite, with renowned directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader and Ron Howard, alongside stars including Adam Driver, Jacob Elordi, Uma Thurman, Ana de Armas and Jude Law, walking the red carpet for the premieres of their critically acclaimed films.

Of course, the Canadian city has also set the scene for a slew of standout sartorial moments. Following the announcement of her filing for divorce from Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez made headlines when she attended the TIFF premiere of Unstoppable in what’s been called “the revenge dress.”

Twisters actress Daisy Edgar-Jones continued to embrace bohemian style when she attended the world premiere of her latest film, On Swift Horses, in which she stars with Priscilla actor Jacob Elordi.

As the festival continues, take a look at some of the stand-out looks.

Celebrities like Lopez and Florence Pugh offered modern takes on a timeless accessory: the black bow. Lopez hit the TIFF red carpet in a body-hugging gown from Tamara Ralph’s fall/winter 2024 couture collection. The floor-length frock, which was covered with silver paillettes in the front and back, and featured large cutouts on both sides, was fastened together with large velvet bows.

Pugh, however, opted for a more traditional use of the black bow when she stepped out for the premiere of her newest film, We Live in Time. The English actress looked every bit the fairytale princess in her strapless, powdery pink ball gown, also from Ralph’s fall/winter 2024 couture collection. The sweetheart neckline and crocodile-textured bow with a black rose in the center made for delicate and coquettish touches.

At the premiere of her new thriller Eden, Sydney Sweeney looked fit for the ’50s in a cream-colored, mid-length dress and cape by Erdem — but it was the subtle addition of embroidered silk flowers that tied her retro-chic ensemble together.

Sandra Oh donned floral embellishments when she walked the red carpet for the festival’s tribute awards. The Canadian actress’s sheer paneled, corseted gown was adorned with oversize black roses along the neckline and at the bottom of the skirt.

Sheer fabrics were a favorite among celebrities at this year’s festival. With help from her stylist Dani Michelle, Edgar-Jones continued to lean into her now-signature bohemian style when she stepped out for the world premiere of her film On Swift Horses. The actress, who’s on the heels of her sartorially lauded Twisters press tour, donned a sheer, pleated pastel blue Gucci dress with a plunging neckline, shouldered cape and train.

Also making a case for the return of boho style? Lopez, who wore a ruffled, chiffon Chloé gown with a relaxed silhouette to the Road to the Golden Globes party on Sept. 7.

Demi Moore and Angelina Jolie took similar approaches to red-carpet dressing when they each stepped out in monochromatic looks. For her film The Substance, Moore looked red hot in a Proenza Schouler midlength leather dress with a square neckline and subtle drop waist — which she paired with matching Aquazzura pumps.

Jolie put a sophisticated spin on a classic black dress when she attended the Without Blood premiere. The Oscar-winning actress opted for Old Hollywood glamour once again, donning a strapless black Dolce & Gabbana gown and matching black opera gloves.
