In February 2018, Jennifer Lawrence announced she was taking a year off from acting.

“I’m going to be working with this organisation as a part of Represent. Us … trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level,” Lawrence told Entertainment Tonight at the time.

While promoting her 2021 film Don’t Look Up, Jennifer Lawrence spoke to Vanity Fair about her real motive behind taking a break from acting.

“I was not pumping out the quality [of work] that I should have,” she admitted to the publication.

“I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?'”

“I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life,” Lawrence added.

“Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’ And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul.”

The actress told Vanity Fair that she felt she “didn’t have a life” and came to the conclusion that “I should go get one”, hence the step away from the big screen.

Lawrence’s longtime friend and producing partner, Justine Polsky, also shared that at the time, stardom had started to “kill her creative spirit”,.

“So, she vanished, which was probably the most responsible way to protect her gifts. And sanity,” Polsky said.
