Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s father announce shock split from wife after 11 years

Stephen Gyllenhaal and his wife Kathleen, who have been separated since 2022, have filed for divorce after 11 years of marriage.

People obtained Los Angeles court documents which revealed Stephen, a director, plans to seek joint custody of the couple’s son Luke, who is aged nine.

Citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce, the 74-year-old listed March 26th, 2022, as the date of their separation.

Former filmmaker Kathleen, 49, (née Man) worked alongside Stephen to produce several projects. Together they created the 2012 dark comedy Grassroots, based on the book Zioncheck for President by Phil Campbell.

A joint statement released to Entertainment Tonight provided further insight into their divorce.

“Yes, it’s true. This is an amicable divorce.”

“Stephen and I have consciously uncoupled and are now co-parenting our beloved son while being the best of friends,” the statement continued.

“We consider ourselves a family still, with togetherness and love.”

His previous relationship with Naomi Foner lasted from 1977 to 2009 saw the pair becoming parents to actors Jake, 43 and Maggie, 46.

Their 32-year-long relationship also cited irreconcilable differences, with Foner accusing Gyllenhaal of leaving her to pay their debt.

“During our marriage, our expenses tended to outpace our income. Accordingly, we accumulated a certain amount of debt,” she wrote, according to the divorce filing.

“I have repeatedly asked Stephen to pay his one-half share of our bills, and he has refused to do so.”

Naomi also spoke with the Los Angeles Times in 2005, where she revealed it was hard to be a working mother, feeling the “pull between the selflessness required for real parenting and the selfishness you need to have in this work.”

“I made a lot of mistakes,” she admitted. “Believe me, I was not a perfect mother, as they will tell you. But I do think that a gift I can give them is the idea that it’s never too late to do the work. Because life doesn’t only go in one direction.”

Jake told People that his parent’s divorce had a significant impact on him.

“It allowed me to be more honest with myself,” he told the publication in 2015.

“There was a sense of two people who said ‘What is our truth?’ It was painful for a lot of people in our family, but that honesty was inspiring,” he added.

“And to me, of course, it’s incredible to be here and it’s so amazing to be in this big movie and to be a part of it, but seeing my dad on this carpet…. his support means everything to me.”
