What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Murder in the Mangroves?
Social media and online reviews play an increasingly important role in all of our lives, and especially in the life of a small business owner. I was interested in exploring how quickly one’s entire livelihood can be effectively ended simply by accusation alone. As far as the series, the concept started with Pete’s character. Pete seems charmed but, like so many of us, he’s trying to curate the perfect life and struggling with the line between his desire to help others and his desire for peace. He’s also trying to honor his mental health journey while being true to his ambitious nature.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Murder in the Mangroves, what would they be?
I made an entire playlist for my book! It’s available through my newsletter and it’s all the songs I listened to when writing Murder in the Mangroves. It’s tough for me to pick just one song for the characters, but at least in this book it would be: Pete Brown: Shady Lane by Pavement Shae Brunell: Hole in The Earth by Deftones Emily Larson: Saltwater by Geowulf
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love most every genre, but my go to is probably mysteries. For now, it’s also my favorite genre to write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
More than I could read in a lifetime! But a few at the top are The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James Cain, and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I’m always working my way through Agatha Christie’s anthology.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Truly, I enjoyed writing every scene. But Luke is a favorite character and I enjoyed writing those scenes.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
As long as I have coffee, I’m good! I spent a lot of time writing this book at my favorite local coffee shop with the same playlist in the background.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Things will always be better and worse than you expect. Also, it will probably be fine. Also, when things seem out of control I sometimes ask (myself or others), “Did you try drinking water?”
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
There’s always more to a situation than we see on the surface and most everyone is doing the best they can. Be kind.
