The YWCA of Fort Dodge’s Chunky Monkey snack mix will go on sale starting Thursday. Sales from the fundraiser go toward the program’s transition fund, which helps YWCA substance abuse treatment program clients with things they need to help start their new drug and alcohol-free lives.

The YWCA of Fort Dodge’s annual Chunky Monkey snack mix fundraiser will kick off this week, with presales opening on Thursday and drive-thru pickups starting on Friday.

The indulgent snack mix is a combination of salty and sweet — popcorn, chips, pretzels, Snickers and caramel — and proceeds from the sales go into the program’s transition fund, which helps the program’s clients with things like paying for new ID cards, birth certificates, Social Security cards and pretty much whatever they might need to transition into their new drug-free life.

“When they’re here, we promote independence and we want them to get a job,” YWCA Executive Director Nici George said. “We want them to get a license, transportation, stuff like that. And then we have a transition closet, so we buy bedspreads, we buy microwaves, we buy anything that they might need for their new apartment.”

After completing the YWCA’s residential substance abuse treatment, most clients are essentially starting fresh and just need that little bit of extra support to get started.

“We would not be able to help them as much if we did not do Chunky Monkey,” George said.

In addition to helping with covering the costs of new IDs and other materials, the transition fund is also used to pay for the occasional off-site activity, where staff take the substance abuse treatment residents to a park or another place for some fun activities.

The snack mix is $5 per bag and $25 per tin and can be picked up on certain days through the end of December at a drive-thru that will be set up in front of the YWCA at 826 First Ave. N.

Drive-thru times will be Tuesdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Preorders can be called in beginning Thursday by calling 515-573-3931.
