In February 2024, rumors began to spread that the Disney-produced Hulu TV series adaptation of the phenomenally popular A Court of Thorns and Roses romantasy series by Sarah J. Mass was no longer happening. Shortly after the word spread, sources close to outlets like Variety said that the rumors were untrue. The show was still on tap for the small screen.
Now, in February 2025, those rumors are now verified news: A Court of Thorns and Roses will not be made into a TV series at Hulu.
Maas’s series has been in development since March 2021, where the author worked on potential scripts for the show with Ronald D. Moore, creator behind Outlander. After that, little more was heard about the show’s future. That is in part due to the writer and actor strike of 2023, when many productions were paused.
Although the show won’t happen at Hulu, that doesn’t mean the project is gone forever. Once the option period is up at Disney at the end of summer 2025, Maas may choose to shop the project to other studios.
A Court of Thorns and Roses has sold over 13 million copies, and it was one of the most borrowed titles in US public libraries in 2023 and 2024. The book and other titles in the series are also among the most challenged and banned in the United States, with A Court of Thorns and Roses and its subsequent four series titles being banned from every public school in the states of Utah and South Carolina.
