In Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, the titular teen and her kraken family live on land among humans to hide from the sea monsters who hurt their kind. However, when Ruby accidentally breaks her mom’s biggest rule by swimming in the ocean and transforms into a giant kraken, she discovers that she is the direct descendant of a sea kraken queen.

The kraken is a mythical sea creature similar in appearance to a giant squid or octopus.

As the film’s title indicates, Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor) is a teenage kraken who disguises as a human. Ruby is a shy and awkward mathlete and a junior at Oceanside High, a fictional American high school. Ruby often feels like an outsider because of her big secret and just wants to be a normal teenager. However, she comes to discover that she is a sea kraken princess who is next in line for the throne. Although Ruby’s exact age is never explicitly stated in Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, according to the Dreamworks website, Ruby is 16 years old.

Ever since then, Agatha has been trying to keep her family safe by hiding among humans on land. Chelsea Is The New Girl At Oceanside High (But She’s Actually The Mermaid Queen Nerissa)

Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy) is the beautiful new girl at Oceanside High who instantly becomes popular. Chelsea later tells Ruby that she’s a mermaid and that her mother, Queen Nerissa, died while trying to reclaim The Trident of Oceanus after Agatha hid it in The Well of Seas. Ruby becomes “super sea-girl besties” with Chelsea, who convinces her to find and destroy the Trident in order to make peace between krakens and mermaids. Since she claims her mother died 15 years ago and is likely supposed to be a junior too, Chelsea would be around 16 years old.

However, it is later revealed that “Chelsea” is actually Queen Nerissa posing as a high school girl with the sole intention of fooling Ruby into retrieving the Trident so that she could get revenge on Agatha. Toward the end of Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, Nerissa indicates that “mermaids don’t age,” which could explain how she’s able to appear as a teenager on land. Since she’s still alive by the end of the film, it’s unclear if her agelessness makes her immortal, too.

Only after Ruby transforms into a giant kraken and Uncle Brill lets it slip that her grandmother sent him does Ruby find out that Grandmamah even exists, let alone that she’s royalty. As queen, it is Grandmamah’s duty to protect the sea from the evil mermaids. Nerissa points out that Grandmamah looks “older,” although her exact age is never revealed. Depending on how old Agatha and her brother Brill are, Grandmamah is most likely around 65 to 75 years old.

Arthur (voiced by Colman Domingo) is Ruby’s laidback father and a shop owner who has a popular channel called Bottled Up where he live streams himself building model ships inside glass bottles. Arthur is a supportive husband and father who, along with his son, Sam, and Agatha’s brother, Brill, agree to throw Captain Gordon Lighthouse off course and prevent him from hunting giant krakens. Like his wife, Arthur is most likely between the ages of 40 and 50 based on the ages of their children.

Sam (voiced by Blue Chapman) is Ruby’s younger brother and highly energetic dodgeball champion. Sam is a kraken like the rest of his family, but, like his father and uncle, he doesn’t turn into a giant kraken because he’s a boy. Sam is also shown to be very curious and asks everybody a lot of questions. Although his age is not mentioned in Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, according to the Dreamworks website, Sam is seven years old and in second grade.

Brill (voiced by Sam Richardson) is Agatha’s brother and, thus, Ruby’s maternal uncle, who shows up unannounced to retrieve Ruby after her initial transformation into a giant kraken at the request of his mother. Brill is shown to be excitable, easily persuadable, and terrible at keeping secrets. Although it is never revealed which sibling was born first, Brill tells Ruby that “growing up, [he] was so proud to be [Agatha’s] brother,” which insinuates that he is younger than his sister. Depending on how old Agatha is, Brill is most likely in his 30s or 40s.
