Holiday blues? You’re not the only one – PortageOnline.com

The Holiday season is upon us, and it brings a feeling of joy and happiness to many. However, for many others, it can worsen depression and anxiety. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), 52 per cent of Canadians report feelings of anxiety, depression and isolation during the holiday season.

Brad Burnell, facilitator and peer support councillor for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Central Region, says that he understands holiday blues can be hard to shake.

“I lost my wife a few years ago, and the first few Christmases after that were very difficult. But now I am getting through it. You never get over it, but at the same time, you start to live better with it by getting out into the community, trying to do things, and being a part of some of the things that may be happening in your particular community. Getting out and just being with people can help a lot.”

Burnell notes that the best advice he can give to people with family is to stay as close as possible to them when feeling blue. He adds that those struggling with little to no family available to assist, should look around the community and associate with different people.

“It’s just a matter of picking up the phone and connecting with people. You know, most of us have somebody out there. And for those that don’t, give us a call at CMHA, and we’ll be here to help.”

If you are struggling, know that there is help and hope.

If, despite your best efforts, you feel overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety or sadness, or if your negative feelings are persistent or get in the way of your daily life, you should reach out for mental health support:
