LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America.
There are changes people can make to protect their heart and stay healthy. February is American Heart Month.
Healthy changes that can be made are regular exercise, staying away from processed foods and knowing risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.
Cardiologists with Norton Healthcare said education is key because the more people know, the better decisions they will make.
“It makes them in charge of their health, and it’s what we call patient-centered,” said Dr. Chioma Obiokoye with Norton Heart and Vascular Institute. “I tell my patients they are the captain of the ship. “So whichever direction they lead that ship, that’s the direction it’s going to go. So if they have the information, the right information, to lead the ship the right way, they have good outcomes.”
Tobacco use and excessive drinking can also play a role in heart disease. The CDC said on average, one person dies every 33 seconds from heart disease and a person has a heart attack every 44 seconds.
