Halle Berry did not mince her words when asked about what she’d say to her kids if they chose to enter the entertainment industry.
The 58-year-old is mom to Nahla, 16, with ex Gabriel Aubry, and Maceo-Robert, 10, with ex-husband Olivier Martinez. She recently filed for sole legal custody of Maceo, arguing that her ex “refuses to coparent.”
At the premiere of The Union last week, Halle was asked by People about what advice she’d give her children about Hollywood. She replied, “I would tell them, do it the way I did it.”
“I had no nepotism. Nobody helped me. I had to learn from the ground up. They would have to do it the same way,” she continued. “They would have to go pay their dues, learn a craft, work hard, and make it on their own for themselves.”
“That way it’s always theirs. Nobody takes it away. That’s what they would have to do,” she concluded.
Halle briefly lived in a homeless shelter after running out of money when moving to New York. Though she called her mother to ask for financial help, she said no — leading the two not to speak for a year. Halle later said in 2017, “That’s probably one of the best things she did for me… She said, ‘If you want to be there, then you work it out.’ And I had to work it out.”
Hey, it’s not like her kids won’t have plenty of other privileges, eh?
