HAIKYUU!! brings hope to fans with trailers for HAIKYUU!! VS. LITTLE GIANT film and new anime special

Haikyuu!! has eased fans’ worries with a surprise announcement and a trailer for the upcoming film.

During a special anime event, the franchise revealed the second finale movie, Haikyuu!! vs. The Little Giant, along with a key visual featuring Karasuno’s past rivals, including Seijoh, Shiratorizawa, and Nekoma. Rising above them all, Hinata leaps into a spiking pose over the wall. The event also unveiled a promotional video highlighting key moments from the anime’s four seasons and the first finale movie. The new film will adapt Karasuno’s match against Kamomedai, whose star player, Korai Hoshiumi, has earned the title “The Little Giant.” Director Susumu Mitsunaka, who helmed the first finale movie, will return for the second.

Fans were stunned by another unexpected reveal—the franchise will release a special TV anime adapting the Fukurodani vs. Mujinazaka match. Titled Haikyuu!!: The Place Where Monsters Go, the special has no confirmed release date yet.

When the franchise first announced that Haikyuu!! would conclude with only two films, fans feared the adaptation would leave out significant content. However, Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle, animated by Production I.G., proved its success, premiering in Japan on February 16, 2024, and soaring to become the country’s second highest-grossing film of the year, earning over 11 billion yen.

Based on Haruichi Furudate‘s best-selling sports manga, Haikyuu!! centers around Hinata Shoyo who is inspired to play volleyball when he sees a Karasuno High School player, dubbed “The Little Giant” due to his short stature, play. Although Hinata is inexperienced, unskilled, and his physicality is a supposed disadvantage to him as an athlete, his passion and thirst to become the best pushes him to find new ways to fly. He meets Kageyama Tobio, whom he previously met when they were in middle school, but they’re no longer on opposite sides of the net; they’re now on the same side and will work together to become champions.

While Haikyuu!! vs. The Little Giant has no announced release date yet, fans can stream the first finale movie on Crunchyroll.
