GoldenEye 007 & Perfect Dark artist Brett Jones has passed away

Brett Jones, whose influential career spanned from games to television to cinema, has passed away. Game designer David Doak, who had worked with Jones in the past, broke the news on X, calling him an “absolute legend,” and later commenting that his talent was what helped make GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark so special.

Jones was an artist for developer Rare from 1994 to 2002. For GoldenEye, he worked on character models, animations, backgrounds, UI, and more. And for Perfect Dark, he again helped out with the visuals and design, on top of providing the voicework for the character of Cassandra. But his career beyond gaming was even more impressive, with him working as a previsualization artist for blockbusters like Fast and Furious 6, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and The Batman. Jones also did VFX for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and BBC’s Dr Who TV series.

According to VGC, he was known to have raised funds for several charities during his life, including for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

In honor of his life and work, the Atkins Gallery in Hinckley, Leicestershire, UK will host an exhibition of his art. A crowdfunding campaign is currently underway, but the organizer promises that the exhibition will go on “no matter what happens.” The exhibition will start on November 4th and will run for two weeks, hoping to do justice to Brett Jones’ art and to the life he lived.
