After two blood-soaked seasons of brutal survival and emotional depth, Primal is officially coming back, but not quite in the way fans might expect. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Emmy-winning animated series is entering a new era with Season 3, and it’s trading in its central duo of Spear and Fang for a new anthology format.
The Spear and Fang’s saga is complete. Now, Primal is evolving.
Speaking with Collider, Tartakovsky teased what fans can expect from the show’s ambitious next chapter:
“It’s a new level. Everything that we did in the first season, we upped a bit in the second season, and the third season is even more.
“I can’t say anything without giving everything away, but it’s just more, and it’s shocking, and it’s unstoppable. At some point, you’re like, ‘I can’t believe I’m watching this.'”
Production on Season 3 was confirmed last year, but Adult Swim officially announced at the Annecy Animation Festival that the new season will premiere in 2026, and while there won’t be a big reveal at San Diego Comic-Con next month, Tartakovsky hinted that New York Comic-Con in October is when the marketing campaign will really kick off.
The show’s new direction isn’t coming out of nowhere. Fans might remember Season 2’s standalone episode, “The Primal Theory,” which stepped away from Spear and Fang to explore different ideas and eras. That episode wasn’t just a one-off, it was a test run.
Tartakovsky continued.
“Quality-wise, animation-wise, story-wise, emotionally, I don’t want to oversell it, but rarely have I been proud of a project like this.
‘“At the end of the day, we’ll have these 30 episodes, and thinking back to Dexter and Powerpuff Girls and even Samurai Jack, how much our quality wavered just because of the process and everything, this is just so solid. And to have 30 solid, incredible [episodes] for a modest budget, I’m really proud of it.”
The question is, what will the next story entail? Will the anthology follow Spear and Fang’s bloodline through time? Will it jump from one ancient civilization to the next in standalone, time-spanning tales of survival and fury?
Whatever the case, with Tartakovsky at the leading the charge and a full creative reset on the table, and I’m excited
