Although Disney will not be releasing the third installment in the beloved Frozen franchise until 2026, there are plenty of rumors flying about what the animated film will be about, and more importantly, how it will maintain the magic of the first two movies. As one of Disney’s most lauded franchises, the Frozen 3 movie has massive shoes to fill.
Frozen 3’s success will hinge on raising the stakes of the franchise. The first Frozen introduced audiences to Arendelle, and Anna and Elsa, and ended with both their kingdom and their relationship being saved. Frozen 2 raised the stakes by bringing the Frozen cast to new surroundings, exploring new magic, and developing Elsa from the frightened girl she used to be to a free and confident woman. In order for Frozen 3 to work out, it must follow in Frozen 2’s footsteps. Audiences must feel reconnected to the story, while also getting fresh new storylines and ideas.
Frozen 3 Must Finally Give Anna What The Previous Movies Failed To
The first two Frozen movies focus on both Anna and Elsa, but Frozen 3 finally has the opportunity to give Anna what its predecessors failed to.
Frozen 3 Should Open With A Time Jump, 7 Years After The First Sequel Debuted
One simple and effective way for Frozen 3 to expand on and change Frozen’s world is by including a time jump. If the third movie begins a few years in the future rather than where Frozen 2 left off, then audiences will automatically be in a new situation where they have to figure out what has changed and why. This is always an interesting puzzle for viewers to unravel, and makes the viewing experience more exciting. By adding a time jump, Frozen 3 can include an abundance of mysteries that immediately make this film different from its predecessors.
What would be even more special is if Frozen 3 was set seven years after Frozen 2. Seven years is the amount of time audiences will have waited for Frozen 3, so it only makes sense, if a time jump occurs, that the characters in Frozen have also been waiting seven years. Not only will this amount of time help audiences relate to the story, but it is also a solid amount of time in which many changes could occur to the characters. Seven years offer enough changes that Arendelle would truly feel like a new place once audiences returned.
There was a six year gap between Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019).
Frozen 3 Jumping Ahead Would Help Elsa’s Arc (But It Would Hurt Anna’s)
A major benefit of a seven-year time jump is that it would help Elsa’s story. At the end of Frozen 2, Elsa goes off on her own to discover who she really is, and seven years would be pivotal to her character development. If Elsa returns to Frozen 3 after seven years of self-discovery, there’s no telling how much she will have changed. In many ways, she could be an entirely new woman, able to not only fend for herself, but advocate for others and for magic. After this time jump, audiences would get an entirely new Elsa.
But unfortunately, a seven-year time jump would skip over an integral part of Anna’s story: her becoming queen. With Elsa gone at the end of Frozen 2, it is Anna’s responsibility to take over Arendelle.
And while Anna has certainly grown from the naive princess she was in the original
Frozen,
there is definitely still work for her to do.
Seeing Anna grow into her role as queen will be significant for audiences, however, a long time jump would make this impossible. After seven years, she would be as changed as Elsa, and audiences would see none of it.
How The Disney Sequel Could Use A Time Jump & Tell Anna’s Best Story
Although a time jump helps Elsa and hurts Anna, there are a couple of ways Frozen 3 could use a time jump while still benefiting both characters. One such route would be implementing a time jump but using flashbacks to show important aspects of the past. With this storyline, perhaps Elsa returns to Arendelle after seven years, and the sisters must reconnect by explaining what they have been up to in the time they have been separated. This would provide context for both Elsa and Anna’s character development.
Another option is to have two separate timelines. While Elsa’s story is told in the present, seven years after the end of Frozen 2, Anna’s story takes place in the past, before the seven years have passed. In this way, audiences could see Elsa as her ideal self while also enjoying the development of Anna as queen. By the end of the film, the sisters can reconnect, having bridged the gap in their timelines. In this way, Frozen 3 can have its time jump without putting Anna’s character development on the line.
