FF7 Rebirth devs didn’t know Sephiroth was going to be in Smash Ultimate

It isn’t coming to the Nintendo Switch, but the next installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, is releasing in just a few days. The devs have been participating in all sorts of interviews about the game, but there’s one interesting tidbit from an interview that might surprise you.

You see, in a Kinda Funny interview with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi, Hamaguchi was asked whether there was any feedback or takeaways from playing as Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He revealed that “it was actually extremely confidential that he was even going to be in it. So, none of the dev team knew, including myself. So it was more like when the whole world knew it, and that’s when we knew it like, ‘Oh! I had no idea!’”
