No, you’re not imagining it. We have sat through the Emmys this year already, actually.
But eight months later, here we are preparing to sit through the annual event once again.
So what gives? Why is television’s best and brightest getting all dolled up and dragging themselves to Peacock Theatre, Los Angeles, for the second time in 2024?

How many times a year are the Emmys?
Despite what this year’s calendar is telling us, the Emmy Awards are usually a once per year event.
Every September, the who’s who of the small screen flock to see which one of them will be proclaimed the best of the best of the last 12 months in television, in an annual ceremony that serves as the mainstream kick-off to awards season (sorry, MTV VMAs, you just can’t compete).
On January 15, 2024, however, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were held – four months after its usual date.

The duo behind Hollywood’s biggest hits just made history
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards – colloquially known as the 2024 Emmys – are being held on September 15 (Monday, September 16 in Australia), and that means we’re back to our regularly-scheduled programming.
Why are there two Emmy Awards in 2024?
There’s a simple explanation for it, really. The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in January were the postponed 2023 Emmys, which were meant to be held in September 2023.
Hollywood, however, was four months into the writers’ and two months into the actors’ strikes, meaning the ceremony had to be pushed back several months.

It was the first time in 22 years that the Emmys, which are known to be the highest honour you can receive in television, had to be postponed – the last time that happened was in 2001, when 9/11 forced the ceremony to be pushed back to that November.
Due to the strikes – the writers’ strike ended with a deal in September, but the actors’ strike continued until December – the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Awards were also postponed by several months, taking place on January 6 and January 7, 2024.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards – which honours technical and artisitic achievements in television – have already come and gone, with Jamie Lee Curtis among the winners announced on September 7.

The January Primetime Emmys were, admittedly, confusing for viewers, due to the fact that it was held in between all the other awards shows that kept to their regular schedule.
That meant The Bear season one was competing for awards in the 2023 Emmys within days of the show’s second season absolutely cleaning up at the Golden Globes.
The 2024-2025 awards season, however, will have no such confusion, as the dual strikes are well and truly over – though The Bear is, of course, nominated again, as are Australians Naomi Watts and Elizabeth Debicki.
