Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady brings Taylor Swift’s historic reign at No.1 to an end

Eminem‘s latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), has debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US, unseating Taylor Swift‘s The Tortured Poets Department after 12 weeks.

It’s a similar story in both Australia and the UK, with the rapper’s 12th studio album topping the list in its first week on both the ARIA list and the UK’s Official Charts.

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, was also awarded a BRIT Billion Award by the UK music body, to mark artists with more than 1 billion streams.

The American performer is only the 39th artist to join the elite BRIT Billion club, following in the footsteps of The Rolling Stones, Queen, ABBA, Whitney Houston, Green Day and others.

Eminem holds the Official Chart record for the artist with the most consecutive No.1 albums in the UK – earned between 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP and 2020’s Music To Be Murdered By.

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) is Eminem’s 12th album and his 11th to hit No.1 in the US, UK and Australia.

It also marks his 10th album to debut at No.1 on the ARIA charts.

Eminem is now tied with U2 in fifth place on the list of artists with the most No.1 albums in Australia, with Taylor Swift coming in third place behind The Beatles and Jimmy Barnes, who tops the list.

In its first week on the Billboard charts in the US, The Tortured Poets Department hit 891.34 million album streams stateside, according to Luminate, the biggest streaming week for an album in history.

Swift’s album debuted at No.1 in the US, UK and Australia on its release in April.

In the US, the Fortnight singer held the top spot for three months and is the only woman to have done so.

Swift beat the previous record held by Whitney Houston’s 1987 album, Whitney, which spent its first 11 weeks at number one.

The Tortured Poets Department tied Morgan Wallen’s 2023 album One Thing at a Time, which also debuted at No.1 and stayed there for 12 consecutive weeks. (It would later re-emerge at the top spot, spending 19 weeks total at No.1.)

The only album to outperform them is Stevie Wonder’s 1976 masterpiece, Songs in the Key of Life. It spent 13 weeks at No.1 after debuting in the top spot; 14 weeks there in total.
