Elizabeth Taylor’s son recalls the moment their family decided to stage an intervention for ‘abusing alcohol and pain meds’

Elizabeth Taylor’s son has spoken candidly about the time their family staged an intervention for the late star to get her the help she needed.

Speaking on BBC’s Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, per People, Christopher Wilding said the family “were all petrified” about her addiction and how she would respond to the intervention, describing her as a “formidable woman”.

People reports the actress’ close confidants and family knew she was “abusing alcohol and pain meds”.

It reportedly took place in the ’80s following the end of her marriage to Senator John Warner.

“She had physical ailments, especially bad back problems, for which the use of pain meds was a legitimate recourse,” Wilding said.

“We’d talk to her, but things got to the point where it was decided an intervention would be necessary.”

In a recording reportedly heard in the show, Taylor said the intervention was “sincere” from her loved ones.

“And I thought, ‘My God, I thought I was a good mother. How have I allowed myself to do this to the people I love most in the world?'”
