Comedian Dave Hughes has shared more details of the horror surf accident which resulted in him being hospitalised on New Year’s Eve

The radio host and dad, 53, was surfing on the Gold Coast when he got into a spot of trouble in the water.

Hughesy dislocated his shoulder at the beach, sharing with fans in an Instagram post that he experienced the “worst pain” of his life.

Speaking on his 2DayFM breakfast show Hughesy Ed & Erin, the comedian said his wife and three kids were taking their first-ever surfing lesson, on “too big” boards, and instructed that if they were to fall off, to fall backwards.

Hughesy told his co-hosts Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan he wasn’t listening properly and didn’t fully understand why, later learning his lesson.

He explained that, when he fell off the front of his board, it then got picked up in a wave behind him and smashed into his back, ultimately dislocating his shoulder.

“I am in trouble here and you know you’re thinking am I gonna drown? The only thing that stopped me from drowning was that I was in knee-deep water,” he explained.

Initially after making it back to shore, the instructor didn’t believe he was in much pain, laughing at the situation before realising its severity and calling the surf lifesavers.

Unfortunately, they had recently stopped using the almighty pain reliever, the green whistle, telling Hughesy he would have to wait for the ambulance.

“They said, we’ll ring an ambulance and they did, but the ambulance never turned up. I was on the beach for an hour crying,” the comedian said before describing the incident as the “most tragic accident of my life.”

Thankfully, he was later taken to hospital and treated for his dislocation, now in a sling.

The Instagram post shared on New Year’s Day showed three different photos of Hughsey appearing in immense amounts of pain, captioned: “Happy NY. Had my least sober NYE in 30+ years. Green whistle came after two hours of [the] worst pain of my life, plus morphine and the rest of them.”

The comedian has been sober for 32 years, ever since he was 21 years old.

His post continued: “Shoulder dislocation whilst surfing. ‘9 out of 10 level nerve damage.’ Shout out to wife, @surfersparadiseslsc, and GC medical professionals for their much needed help! Will be in a sling for a while, not sure when my next right-handed high five will be.”
