As previously reported, DC Comics didn’t have a presentation scheduled for San Diego Comic-Con this year, because, as DC honcho James Gunn put it, he’s too busy directing his new take on Superman. We wondered whether DC would find other ways to get a few big reveals in at the expo, though, and sure enough, the “Jim Lee & Friends” panel debuted the first teaser trailer for Creature Commandos, the animated Max series that’s meant to kick off Gunn’s new DC movie and TV continuity. The series features yet another roster for Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad — this time, with an all-non-human lineup.
Apart from possibly finally explaining what’s up with Weasel, the goggle-eyed oddity voiced and body-acted by Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn in the live-action movie The Suicide Squad, the animated series features Viola Davis returning to her role as Amanda Waller (previously seen in Peacemaker, Black Adam, and both Suicide Squad movies), alongside fellow Peacemaker veteran Steve Agee as John Economos.
The rest of the animated series’ cast includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, and Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky. Sean Gunn also voices G.I. Robot.
This is the kickoff for an era James Gunn has labeled as “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” and it’s meant to set the tone for DC’s upcoming roster of live-action movies and TV as well — though it’s got a bit of a vibe in common with Max’s Harley Quinn as well. The first season will run for seven episodes, and will premiere in December, though no specific date was given. DC’s official series description gives just a hint of the humor in the series:
Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option.
