As chilly as it is in your own backyard, only one place at any one time can lay claim to being the coldest place on the planet. And if you are in Watrous – tag, you’re it.
Our curious newscasting colleague Steven Wilson from our sister outlet, DiscoverWeyburn.com, did some digital digging this morning and came up with the spot that even beat out the icy climes of Antartica at 9:00 am this morning.
“Temperatures were frigid. In fact, Watrous was not just the coldest place in Saskatchewan, but was the coldest place on the planet and including the Antarctic with a temperature of -42 this morning,” Wilson confirmed.
Wilson tapped into the worldwide temperature monitoring site Weather Now – Weather Extremes, and according to the values posted on the site, the top ten coldest spots on the planet were all in Saskatchewan.
Wilson’s broadcast centre of Weyburn made top 12, but he notes that the southeast has broken temperature records during the cold snap.
As the morning moves on, other places are seeing the temperature variously rise and fall as the pool of cold air slowly churns.
Environment Canada assures us that the cold air is moving out of the prairies, and we could see records broken on the other end of the scale. Meanwhile Watrous, enjoy the brief and less than enviable claim to fame.
