Cobra Kai Changes Why Miyagi’s Karate Kid 2 Enemy Calls Him A Coward

Warning: SPOILERS for Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 2Cobra Kai season 6’s revelations about Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita) in the Sekai Taikai gives new context to why Sato Toguchi (Danny Kamekona) called him a coward in The Karate Kid Part II. Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) was traumatized to discover that not only did Mr. Miyagi fight in the Sekai Taikai tournament, but he also killed his opponent. Daniel-san is now questioning everything he ever knew about his sensei, and Cobra Kai also tacitly adds a wrinkle to how Sato viewed Miyagi in The Karate Kid Part II.

Primarily set in Okinawa, The Karate Kid Part II introduced Sato Toguchi as Mr. Miyagi’s childhood friend-turned-enemy, as well as his nephew, Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto), who became Daniel LaRusso’s rival. Miyagi and Sato were best friends who were trained in Miyagi-Do karate by Miyagi’s father (Charlie Tanimoto). But both Sato and Miyagi were in love with Yukie (Nobu McCarthy). Sato was engaged to Yukie by arranged marriage, but Miyagi left Okinawa rather than fight Sato to the death over honor. Cobra Kai season 6 gives more info on what happened to Miyagi afterward.

Sato May Have Known About Miyagi In The Sekai Taikai

Cobra Kai season 6’s revelations that Mr. Miyagi (Brian Takahashi) killed his opponent in the Sekai Taikai help explain why Sato was so disgusted by Mr. Miyagi and called him a “coward” in The Karate Kid Part II.Sato may have known about Mr. Miyagi’s actions in the Sekai Taikai. Given what Miyagi did then, it helps underscore why Sato was so sickened and infuriated by Miyagi’s “cowardice” by refusing to fight him to the death in The Karate Kid Part II.

Cobra Kai season 6 sees the main crew head to Barcelona for the Sekai Taikai, where they face off against a new bunch of fighters (& their actors).

After all, if Mr. Miyagi already fought a man to the death at the Sekai Taikai, Sato may have considered Miyagi a hypocrite. The elder Mr. Miyagi didn’t want Daniel fighting in tournaments and taught Daniel-san that karate was only for defense and self-improvement. This was a philosophy Miyagi developed partly because of his regret for what happened in the Sekai Taikai. However, the fact that Miyagi avoided Sato’s challenge to fight to the death for 40 years when he already killed a man once illuminates Sato’s attitude toward Miyagi in The Karate Kid Part II.

Like Mr. Miyagi, Sato passed away before Cobra Kai begins. However, as more information about Mr. Miyagi’s past comes to light, how Sato may have been linked or involved becomes an open question. The Karate Kid Part II established that Sato and Miyagi did not see each other between Miyagi leaving Okinawa in the 1940s and his return with Daniel LaRusso in 1985. Yet Sato was a wealthy industrialist with connections, and, logically, he may have been keeping track of Mr. Miyagi all along.

Sato was also a Miyagi-Do sensei, and he would likely have known that Mr. Miyagi entered the international Sekai Taikai competition representing Miyagi-Do. Sato may even have been present to watch Miyagi fight and kill his opponent. If that’s the case, Sato may have expected Miyagi to return to Okinawa to settle their matter of honor, and he would have been incensed that Miyagi never did so. Cobra Kai hasn’t addressed where Sato fits into Mr. Miyagi’s revised life story, but Sato is one of the most intriguing question marks of Mr. Miyagi’s past.
