Back in 2019, it was announced that Channing Tatum and producer Roy Lee (IT: Chapter 2, Doctor Sleep) were going to be developing a live-action film adaptation of Sam Keith’s comic book The Maxx. There’s been no update on that project since it was announced so I just assumed it was dead. But, according to Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, The Maxx is actually moving forward at Paramount Pictures with Tatum still attached to take on the lead role.
It’s also reported that Crystal Moselle (The Wolfpack, State Kitchen) is now attached to write and direct the film. The Maxx was such an awesome 90s comic book series, and I enjoyed reading it when I was growing up. Also, remember that 1995 animated series from MTV!? That was pretty rad as well. This was just such a bonkers story and character!
Originally published by Image Comics in 1993, The Maxx is known for its interesting blend of superhero and psychological drama elements. The story follows Maxx, a homeless man who believes himself to be a powerful superhero in an alternate reality known as the “Outback.” In the real world, Maxx is a vagrant taken care of by a social worker named Julie Winters. The series explores the complex interplay between Maxx’s delusions and his real-life struggles, as well as the trauma and psychological issues faced by both Maxx and Julie.
I’m really curious to see how The Maxx will be brought to life as a feature film. Especially with the visuals of the insane-looking character.
