Cathy Shim Boards Anderson .Paak Film – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Korean American comedian, writer and producer Cathy Shim is the latest to join the cast of the film K-Pops! from first-time director and eight-time Grammy winner Anderson .Paak (who also stars). She will play Diamond, the energetic iconic host of a K-pop competition show in Seoul, and .Paak’s hard-to-please boss.

K-Pops! follows a washed-up musician from Los Angeles who attempts to reinvigorate his career by joining a band for a K-Pop competition show in Seoul and discovers that his long-lost son has the chance to front one of the country’s hottest new groups. He jumps at the opportunity to capitalize on his son’s stardom for his renaissance but ultimately learns that fatherhood is much more fulfilling and meaningful.

Scripted by .Paak and Khaila Amazan, K-Pops!‘s producers are Greg Silverman and Jon Berg on behalf of Stampede Ventures, Jaeson Ma on behalf of EST Studios, Park on behalf of Big Dummie, and .Paak for Apeshit Films. Amazon is executive producing alongside Stampede Ventures’ Gideon Yu, Chris Bosco, Grant Torre, and Michael Tadross, as well as EST Studios’ Eric Tu. Tadross is heading up physical production, with WME Independent handling sales. Live Nation Productions recently came aboard as a strategic partner.

Shim got her start in K-pop and then transitioned to stand-up comedy. She recently created and starred in a pilot for Warner Media, Seoul Hunters, directed by Robert Ben Garant starring herself, Peter Kim and South Korean comedian Young-Chul Kim. Previously, she created for Comedy Central a pilot called Chasers starring herself and Rob Heubel with Matt Walsh, Gaten Matarazzo and Rhys Darby. She was most recently seen in the Ashanti and Cedric the Entertainer feature The Plus One.

Additional credits include Reno 911!, L.A.’s Finest, Drake & Josh and Deal With It as well as starring roles in Paramount/Nickelodeon feature Paws Of Fury, The Sun is Also a Star directed by Ry Russo-Young, 30 Miles From Nowhere and the indie Raising Buchanan, the latter which she also co-produced.
