On January 7, 2005, Pitt and Aniston announced they were formally separating after seven years together.

“For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media,” they said in a joint statement to People.

“This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another.”

While some fans hoped to see the pair reconcile, Aniston filed for divorce just a few months later in March citing “irreconcilable differences”, per People.

“There are many stages of grief,” Aniston said of the split in an interview with Vanity Fair soon after.

“It’s sad, something coming to an end … I wish it weren’t in front of the world. I try really hard to rise above it.”

Her divorce from Pitt was finalised on October 2, 2005.
