Bong Joon-ho, the talented director behind Parasite, is looking ahead to his next live-action film, and it sounds like something he’s been waiting a long time to bring to life.
While his upcoming sci-fi epic Mickey 17 is set to hit theaters in March, Bong has also been quietly developing a horror action film set in the underground subway system of Seoul, and this is an idea he’s been mulling over since 2001.
In an interview with MBC Korea (translated via Fangoria), Bong described the project as a personal one. “That’s kind of like my life project,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about it since 2001.”
The director even shared details on how the film might open, painting a tense and chaotic sequence. “We’re running through the underground section of the subway,” he explained. “In the car next to us, people wearing similar clothes start to come over to our side. We’re running. A lot of people start to come over to our side.”
This isn’t the first time Bong has hinted at this film. Back at the 2020 Oscars, where Parasite won a bunch of awards, including Best Picture, he mentioned he had begun developing a Korean-language film that would be set in Seoul and feature “unique elements of horror and action.”
Before we get to see what nightmares Bong has in store for this new project, audiences will first get to experience Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson. The film follows a disposable employee sent to the frozen world of Niflheim, where every time he dies, a new version of him is regenerated, memories mostly intact.
