Bette Midler’s simple secret to her decades-long marriage
Bette Midler has revealed the secret behind her 39-year-long marriage.
After knowing him for six weeks, the actress married Martin von Haselberg in Las Vegas on December 16, 1984, and they have been together ever since.
Midler reflected on her marriage during an interview with Entertainment Tonight about her upcoming comedy film The Fabulous Four.

The Hocus Pocus star revealed her secret to maintaining a decades-long relationship was unconventional.
“Separate bedrooms,” she said with a smile. “My husband snores,” she explained.

Since their wedding, the happy couple have had different bedrooms, sharing: “It’s been a fabulous ride.”
When the pair decided to get married, Midler didn’t have much time to choose a wedding dress and picked “the first thing on the rack”.
In an interview with Today with Hoda & Jenna this week, the actress explained why they married hastily.
“The time was right, and he was fabulous, and I thought, what could happen? You know, and I took a flyer because people took flyers then. I think they still do,” Midler said.

“And we went to Vegas and got married by an Elvis impersonator. Always a good idea,” she said. “And on the way back, it snowed. So we took that as a very, very good omen. It was very beautiful.”

“I think the secret is giving each other a lot of lead and a lot of room and not being in each other’s faces all the time,” she told People in November 2014. She said “listening” and compromise are key to a happy marriage.
The pair share one daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, whom they welcomed in 1986.
