Despite positive reviews and an even better audience reception, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina underperformed in its box office debut. The film made an estimated $25 million in its first three days of release in domestic theaters, which is roughly $10 million less than the already modest projections heading into its opening frame. It’s also the second-lowest three-day debut for the franchise, ahead of only the first John Wick film, which was released back in 2014 and headlined by Keanu Reeves.
Ballerina stars Ana de Armas in the titular role, and is set between the events of the blockbuster third and fourth films in the main franchise — John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and John Wick: Chapter 4. It’s also an important opportunity for de Armas to prove her box office worth, following a couple of memorable appearances in hits such as No Time to Die and Knives Out. Incidentally, one of her first Hollywood roles came in the thriller Knock Knock, which featured Reeves in the central role. Directed by Len Wiseman, Ballerina opened to mostly positive reviews; it’s sitting at a “certified fresh” 75% Rotten Tomatoes score, and has earned an even better 94% audience score.
The movie’s $25 million haul wasn’t enough to dethrone Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which held on to the top spot on the domestic charts for the third time in a row. Lilo & Stitch made an estimated $32.5 million this weekend, pushing its running domestic total past the $330 million mark. Globally, the film has grossed over $700 million, and is on track to become Disney’s first billion-dollar hit since Moana 2 last year. In third place, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning grossed around $15 million in its third frame, pushing its running domestic total towards the $150 million milestone. This weekend, it overtook J.J. Abrams’ Mission: Impossible III both domestically and worldwide.
Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Couldn’t Crack the Top Five
The fourth spot was claimed by Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends, which made under $9 million in its second frame, essentially throwing in the towel just 10 days into its domestic run. The movie has made around $35 million at the domestic box office so far, and is set to conclude its run with under $50 million. By comparison, the Jaden Smith reboot from 2010 made $55 million in its opening weekend alone. Rounding out the top five list was Final Destination Bloodlines, which generated over $6 million this weekend, pushing its running total past the $120 million mark. Meanwhile, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, which debuted to positive reviews last week, couldn’t crack the top five. The movie expanded into wide release this weekend, grossing around $6 million. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
