Ashford Surrey incident: Woman dead and girl injured

The woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene, and the child has been taken to hospital, Surrey Police said.

Officers attended a property in Woodthorpe Road in Ashford at 1.15pm on Thursday following a report of concern for safety.

The victims and the man arrested, who is in his 30s, were known to each other, and there is not believed to be any wider risk to the community, the force said.

Senior investigating officer detective chief inspector Kimball Edey, of Surrey Police, said: “This investigation is in its early stages and a team of specialist officers are working around the clock to gather as much information as possible.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims at this unbelievably difficult time.”

A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: “A murder investigation has been launched after the death of a woman in Ashford on Thursday, 16 January.

“Officers were called to an address on Woodthorpe Road at 1.15pm following a report of a concern for safety at the location.

“A woman in her 20s and a two-year-old girl were found at the address with very serious injuries.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The child has been taken to hospital for treatment.

“A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

“The victims and the suspect were known to each other. There is not believed to be any wider risk to the community.

“An investigation, led by the Surrey and Sussex Police Major Crime Team, is underway and enquiries remain ongoing.”
