AQUAMANATEE is ready to make a splash in new early readers graphic novel

Last month, Aquaman returned with a new ongoing comic series. There hasn’t been an ongoing Aquaman series since the last volume concluded back in 2021 so the King of the Seas is making up for lost time. Case in point, DC has announced Aquamanatee, a new early reader that follows the adventures of latest adorable aquatic supehero who’s sure to make a splash.

Here’s how DC describes Aquamanatee:

Marlow the manatee isn’t exactly superhero material. He sleeps a lot, eats a lot, toots a lot, and has never ventured out of his safe saltwater bay. And yet the sweet bumbling Marlow dreams of adventure, of derring-do, and of making a difference. He dreams of being a hero like Aquaman, of whom Marlow is a mega fan! But when a series of impossible events leads to Marlow having superpowers and not only meeting his hero but getting to team up with Aquaman himself…suddenly Marlow isn’t so sure he’s ready for his dreams to come true.

Could an awkward blundering super-powered manatee be the best man-atee for the job?

This new graphic novel as part of DC’s early reader program for ages 5-7 comes courtesy of writer Ben Clanton with art by Cassandra Federman. Clanton is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator best known for the Narwhal and Jelly series, so this Aquamanatee project is perfectly suited to his sensibilities. Likewise, Federman has quite a bit of experience with manatees having previously been a manatee rescuer. Since becoming an author/illustrator her published books include This Is a Sea Cow (Albert Whitman, 2019) and This Is a Seahorse (2020), which won an ILA Children’s and Young Adult Book Award.

This will be the first book in a series by Clanton and Federman and follows the launch of DC’s early reader program for ages 5-7 with Superman’s Good Guy Gang by Rob Justus on July 1, 2025!

Check out some interior preview pages from the forthcoming graphic novel below. Aquamanatee is due out in stores on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025.
